How UK university applications work
A plain-English overview of the steps involved in applying to a UK university, and who decides what.
Applying to a UK university follows a fairly predictable path, even though the detail varies by institution and course level.
Choosing a course
Start with the subject and level you want to study, then check the entry requirements published by each university. Requirements normally cover previous qualifications, grades and English language ability.
Preparing your application
Most applications ask for academic transcripts, proof of English where relevant, identification, a personal statement and sometimes a reference. Gathering these early avoids delays close to a deadline.
Submitting
Undergraduate applications are commonly made through UCAS. Many postgraduate courses are applied for directly with the university. Your adviser will confirm which route applies to your course.
Decisions
The university makes the decision. An offer may be unconditional, or conditional on you meeting stated requirements such as final grades or an English test score. HelpMeDegree cannot make or influence an admissions decision.
After an offer
If you accept an offer and meet any conditions, the university confirms your place and issues enrolment information. International students then complete the separate immigration steps required by the UK authorities.
